FILIPINO CHRISTMAS PARTY

Dance Practice, 80s theme!

Every year the filipino organising committee organises a big Christmas party at Rhyl town hall for everyone to attend. It's very joyful and memorable. To make it interesting there is a programme which consists of performances, such as dances, singing and raffle draws. I was part of the dancing groups as you can see below in the picture. The theme was 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, my group had the 70's music and we met up whenever everybody was free to practice. Someone decided on the music we were going to dance with and someone choreographed. To be honest it was quite hectic but our practices paid off and we performed very well! It got me out of my comfort zone since I don't really like to be performing in front of a big crowd but it was exciting and I got through it. But if someone would ask me again if I were to do it again for next year, I would probably hide back again in my comfort zone and reject the offer. I think this was a great way to experience and realise the things that I can do and shouldn't be afraid of doing but also to find out the things I like and don't.

CAROLLING

Choir Practice & Performance: Chernobyl Trust

We had 8 choir practice sessions and we were lucky to have Tasha as our coordinator. We sang a mixture of christmas carols and some classics from the Beatles. I was only a singer but there were guitar players, keyboard players and tamborine players. I was going to play the guitar but I suddenly got stage fright so I decided against it. Maybe as a challenge I might play next time.
My favourite song out of the whole pack was 'Hey Jude' by the Beatles. It was very relaxing and had a good message, also the nah nah nah bit at the end is just fun to rock to.
Performing at bay view was a first for me since I've never been in a choir before. I enjoyed it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We had people stopping and singling along and the crowd was very generous.
I think I prefered singing at the Convent of Mercy Nursing Home because it was quiet you could really appreciate the songs. And looking at the elderly people enjoying the music and clapping along made it worth while. They may not akways be able to go out so it was right that us young people to go and visit them.
In conclusion it was a great time for bonding with the IB1s and we were helping out for a good cause.

POINT MARKER

Basketball Match between Llandrillo Lightnings and West Cheshire College

Angel and I had the pleasure of keeping track of the team's scores. I was responsible for West Cheshire and Angel for the home team. Our task was to write down the number of who scored, the number on their jersey top and how many they got. I was panicking at the start because I've never dine anything like this before but David, their coach was extremely kind and helpful and told me everything I had to know. It was quiet a challenge because the pace of the game was very quick and I had to make sure I familiarised myself with the team to make it easier. By the end of the game I knew who was the main shooter, in defence and the rebounder. West Cheshire was very skilled and won with an outstanding score of 100.
What I noticed during the game was their coaches demands. I for one thought he was being a bit harsh at times but looking back I guess it was necessary to keep the player in a state of mind to win. Their coach was very passionateand the game and it showed in his coaching.
I also saw and learnt that even though one team looses, at the end of the game both team come together and shake hands and there's no arguements or hard feelings. It was nice to see that there is good sportsmanship, no cheating just a fair game.
I would like to do something like this again so I learn about the sport itself and I like sports anyway so I enjoy it a lot too.

PSEUDOSCIENCE TRIP

Pseudoscience at Manchester

We went to Manchester early morning to go to some talks that also included being hypnotized. The talks were quite interesting but I didn't agree with all what was said. For example they said that vitamins were completely useless. I think they do help people and from experience has helped me too and I think just the way they said that is was useless was too much of a statement. But the disagreement I had made me listen more and I guess I enjoyed it more. There was a lot of people who came and the room was almost full of students and tutors. The hypnotist that came wanted some participants but I didn't qualify with the initial test that he did which showed if we were suggestible people. There was this test where we had to imagine closing the light and we had to close our eyes and if you were suggestible you couldn't open your eyes until he said you could. But I could open my eyes which meant I wasn't suggestible. I think I was not suggestible because I was very aware and knew that I was in control of myself. I was very suspicious of everything he did so I guess that made me a less reliable participant.
This hypnotist part of the day was very funny and very interesting because there were some people that did everything he suggested to them. I was wondering if they were actors or just doing everything he said to be funny but it did look like they weren't acting. It sort of makes you think about different kinds of people and how you could manipulate others for your own good or to help. You can hypnotize a person to forget a traumatic event or you can hypnotize someone to do something bad. So it sort of makes you think about morals and peoples intentions.

CAFOD SPONSORED WALK

Father Charles from St.Mary's church organised a sponsored walk to raise money for CAFOD. It started early by taking a group of us to a church service in Colwyn Bay and we started the walk after mass. There was a group from a school from Flint that we went with. The walk was from Colwyn Bay to Rhyl back to St.Mary's church. It took just over five hours and we had a good talk with the students from Flint school. It was also ironic that they were the same group that we went to the same retreat in year 10 with.
I wanted to do this sponsored walk because it helps people in need of help. It helps the poor and also it was good exercise. I did finish the walk and by the next day my legs were aching so much that it hurt to walk up the stairs. But I would have done it again because it goes toward a good cause. The only difficulty I faced was being really pessimistic and thinking I want a lift or why is it so far away. But being with other students and friends made it worth while. I think this activity showed commitment and endurance because it was a long activity and you are volunteering so you are giving up your own time.
The money goes forward to help developing countries which I think is the right thing to do because if we don't help people that need help then we are just being selfish and it's just not good for the world either because they'll be lagging behind when we have the resources to help them.
If I were to do this again next year I would definitely advertise the event for others to join because that way you can raise more money and raise more awareness about the developing countries. This activity has helped me to organise my own events to raise money for our chosen charities in the IB.

FUNDRAISING

Bag Packing at Morrisons: Typhoon Haiyan

Angel and I thought it was neccessary to help raise some money for the Philippines since we ourselves are from the Philippines. I was nice to see so many people helping and the customers were very generous. Who knew small change could amount to so much! Everything little thing helps when we work together. It was a horrific storm that came through Tacloban and it doesn't help a country that is still undeveloped.
It was very heartwarming when so many countries come together to help.
I've never done bag packing before and it was a great experience. It felt good knowing that you helped.

COOKING & NAIL ART

Since university was soon on its way, I had a thought that once I live alone I will be forced to cook for myself since I will then become independent of my parents. I am clueless when it comes to cooking so I asked a friend (her name is Andrea) to teach me a fairly easy dish that's quick to do and taste great. I also wanted to cook a filipino dish so we decided to make Pancit. It is a noodle based dish with a chicken and mixed vegetable topping. It is very popular in the Philippines and is very well known. So in exchange for her knowledge I went and bought the ingredients. It was really fun to make and it was also a great laugh as I didn't have a clue on what to do. With Andrea's help, I somehow made a delicious Pancit dish that my parents also approved of. We plan to meet up again and cook more dishes. It also made me realise how much I depend on my parents for example, cooking, laundry and ironing. I will soon be doing those things by myself and I think this was a good idea so that I won't be overwhelmed when I get to university.
After we made Pancit, we decided to do some nail art since it was too early to say goodbye and we didn't want to waste the day, so might as well be creative! We both really like to paint our nails, but mostly just plain block colours, so this time we ventured out of our comfort zone and painted our nails with a panda design! It definitely required a steady hand and a lot of patience because you had to wait for the paint to dry before proceeding to the next step. Final result wasn't like a printed copy of a panda but it looked like panda. It was just free time we filled with fun and we got cute nail designs too.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

As part of the charity we are supporting, we had the opportunity to help with Operation Christmas Child. I think it's a great charity to support because it makes the lives of unprivilidged children, especially during Christmas time. This is the time where families get together and since all they have is each other, a small present can give the child a little extra. They can get toys, clothing, toiletries, sweets, stationary and even a letter.
So as a class we came up with the idea of a cupcake stall at the reception and all the proceeds goes towards O.C.C. In total we raised £50.45! We can then use this money to get the boxes sent off or to make more boxes. It was such a lovely event we had because everyone contributed in one way or another. We had a variety of cupcakes. We had chocolate fudge, vanilla and orange and poppy seed. The designs were also very well thought of. Springkles were very popular. We sold every single cupcake at the two sales we had which was great!
We also had generous donations to place in the boxes and we are all very grateful to them.
I think it's important to help with cases like these because everybody wants to be equal and if we could spread out food, water and clothing every single person could have something. Sharing is vital, we may not have everything spread out evenly right now but at least we're trying to help and that is a good start.
We hope that the boxes we made are distributed to the right places. That those children know that somewhere in the world somebody cares for them.

CAS TRIP WITH IB1S

OUT AT BACH ADVENTURES

I took my seat on the bus next to Angel. It was very cramped with all our bags but we made it work. It didn't take long until we reached our first destination, chatting and singing along to the radio helped. We met with our instructor Gordon who was very kind and helpful. Our first challenge was gorge walking which I have never done before. We changed into bright red waterproof pants and jacket, blue or yellow helmets, floats and wellies. We took a quick group photo and then we were off. It was lucky that we weren't separated into two small groups because we were already a small group to begin with.
We walked for a bit in the forest and learnt about the plants that grow there. I also found out that wellies make it difficult to balance when walking on tree vines and rocks. When we got to the river I was quite anxious to go in. The first time the water went into my wellies it felt like my feet were immediately frozen then trying to empty them sent the freezing water to my knees! But after a while giving up on emptying my wellies my feet did start to feel again. It was quite scary that a wrong step could mean getting hurt but thankfully that didn't happen. Some of us even got to help out with Gordon; making a barrier where the flow of the current was stronger to help the others. We got plenty of pictures as well.
The challenging part was when we reached the mini waterfall. I decided that I might as well go under it since I might never  get the chance to do this again and also I also believe in 'CARPE DIEM'. When going the in water I didn't realise how deep it was and how cold too. It wasn't really good that I was wearing a fleece because it help a lot of water and because heavy. I wasn't sure at that point if I was going to carry on because it became hard to breathe and I couldn't swim but Angel was urging me to go and I wanted to experience it too to I jumped towards the group under the waterfall. I didn't stay very long because I found it hard to breathe so I quickly went back to the rocks....leaving behind my wellies. The current and the fact that they weren't snug on my feet made them slip off. I tried to get them back but I could go down and get then with my hands because of the float I was wearing. I'm guessing it was a shock to Gordon. I remember him saying 'You lost both of them!' and everyone was staring at my stripy socks. I thought it was very funny. Luckily Gordon found the left one, I was happy with that, I just needed to be more careful and try not to lose the one I had left.
We got to jump in where the water was deeper near the elephants bum, I think that's what it's called. That felt exhilarating, I didn't really care that it was cold anymore. We got to slide on rocks too. We had the opportunity to go down backwards but I decided not to.
It was so much fun but walking back I felt like an ice cube and the rocks were not nice to my right foot. I managed to get the nickname 'Hop' from Gordon too but I didn't mind.
Later on I went abseiling for the first time. It was a great experience but I enjoyed gorge walking more and I would love to do that again if I could.
When we got to the hostel we all good washed up and got ready for dinner. But a small group of us decided to go for a little stroll before dinner. We went to the ruins. It was interesting trying to remember what the ruined house would have looked like before and how time and weather can change something so beautiful.

After dinner we started to play games in the lounge. We basically had to guess the name of famous people like Judi Dench and Santa Claus. That was a bit frightning going up infront of the group but I did enjoy it and thought that it wasn't too bad. We also did a pass the parcel but instead of sweets we had dares to do. I got 'Smile for the rest of the game'. I thought it would be really easy but it really wasn't. By the end of the game my cheeks were aching so much.
The next day we had more activities like crossing planks to avoid the shark infested custard, throwing 6 juglling balls with an egg and the skiing game where we had to avoid an avalanche. I think I had an awesome team. We did really well on the penguin game because we won twice!
I think the CAS trip was a very enjoyable and exciting and would encourage all the upcoming IB1s to do it. We had so many bonding moments and there were many laughs too. I learnt that it takes a long time to really get to know someone. It's deffinitely improved my interpersonal skills and I've made so many good friends! 'What team??? Go wildcats!' \m/

TUTORING & DRAWING

I tutored Rafael today, a six year old who I also met during my work experience at the primary school Ysgol Mair. I helped him with his school work. He had maths and a book to read. For the maths work he had to count coins to reach a certain amount. There was a grid with coins and he had to go from start to finish. However I miss read the instructions and didn't mention to Rafael to end at the finish block. We sorted it out in the end and all was well. It gave me a wake up call to read the instructions carefully because this can relate to my exams. I will need to carefully read the questions and not rush and miss out important detail. Every point counts!
The book he had to read was about the life cycle of a swan. I thought he read very well, it was fast and fluent. While reading the book with him I also learned things about swans like baby swans are called 'cygnets'. It makes you realise that knowledge can be learnt from a variety of places and we shouldn't be quick to judge. Just because something seems childish and simple doesn't mean we should dismiss it.
To end the session we went onto the creativity side. We took out some coloured paper and drew swans but it was a little bit more difficult for Rafael so he drew trees and game characters.
It feels nice to just draw and let time slip away. You get to improvise and be creative. That is why drawing is one of my hobbies.

GUITAR PRACTICE

Today was my first time joining the church's guitar practice/lessons. Father Charles teaches a small group on a Saturday at 2pm for an hour. Apart from playing the guitar there are people who sing. We are practicing hymns to play for the Saturday mass at 5pm. We practiced the songs, 'Amazing Grace', 'Silent Night' and 'John B Sails'. There were other songs too but we ran out of time.
I was very grateful for Father Charles to let me join and to spend an hour of his busy life to teach a few eager people. It's made me think that even when it feels like your time is being spent doing one thing; like with me doing work for IB, I can and need to spend time to relax and enjoy other activities. I need to find time for my friends and shouldn't be too serious all the time.

PHYSICS SIT IN

IB Physics

At the beginning of the IB I was unaware of which higher level subjects to choose and we were able to sit in certain subjects that could have been a possible higher level subject and so I picked Physics. I chose to sit in Physics because it was a science subject which I am very keen on which is why I have chosen to do higher level Chemistry and Biology. I told myself before doing the IB that if I were to do A-Levels if I couldn't quialify for the IB I would choose to do Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths so Physics was always a possibility. I remember the first lesson was a quick mock test and I remember how panicked I was that I didn't know the answers and what was worse was that we were going around the class sharing answers. So when Nick got to me I was quite embarassed and quiet because I had no clue about most of the questions but luckily most of the class was in the same position as me so maybe it was just because it was the beginning of the year and that it was the first lesson. I wanted to do well in it so I made sure to listen to all that was discussed in class and made notes on the past paper. It was a good wake up call I think because it makes you realise that you are no longer in the summer holidays and you need to get back into routine and focus again.

In the end I didn't pick Physics as my higher level subject due to a few reasons. Firstly it was immensely difficult and second there wasn't enough people wanting to do it so the lesson was cancelled or you had to share the Physics lesson with the A-Levels. Sharing the class would have made it tooo complicated for the teachers Nigel and Nick because they would need to juggle and balance both sylabuses and making sure to cover everything that was required for both. What I learnt that college was a big step up from high school. The Physics or maybe all of my lessons was 10 times more indepth and harder whereas in high school the teachers would spoonfeed you the content required. You don't have to go to college so all the work has to be for yourself because the tutors aren't going to chase up work that is late. Even though I did not choose Physics as my higher level subject I think the experience was still valuable. It gave me an insight into the subject and college ways too. It was also a good way to meet other students and get to know the teachers better.

SQUASH 7

Today Angel and I played squash with two sport students, Chris and John. They're one of our filipino friends here at college. Katrin was with us too but she just watched and had tokkie conversations with us. I feel like I actually played a proper squash game with Chris and John even though I lost to both; the point differences wasn't that big. I had so much fun and it even got quite competitive. Let's just say I can dodge really well. All I need to improve now is my serving.
Another improvement was that we didn't lose the ball.
Squash doesn't feel like an activity I have to do for CAS hours, I actually enjoy it and even without CAS I would still play it with my friends. I'm also seeing the benefit of squash with my health and it will also improve the health of the people I play with. I don't get tired as easily and I can keep playing for a longer amount of time. I think now I realise how important it is to stay fit and active but also to be persistent in what I do.

SQUASH 6

Today I played with Nathan, Katrin and Angel after we had our Spanish class. I was a nice way to end a school day. We all took turns playing because only two could play at any time. While Angel and Nathan was playing I was watching them play with Katrin and having tokkie converstaions.
Yet again the ball was lost and Angel had to pay Linda 50p. You really have to make sure you hit the ball straight, not too high that it doesn't come back down but not too low that you lose a point.
I think I'm imporoving my aiming skills now I just to learn tricks and tactics to beat my competitor. I think that's the key things in life is to find the things you're not that good in and to improve. It's the only way to succeed because we're not born with knowledge, we're all like a blank peice of paper. We need to learn to develop.

TABLE TENNIS

Today Angel, Alex and I tried table tennis that was advertised in the little cards handed out by Dave at the sports center. He was really pleased to see students participating and that his little cards weren't a waste. Dave was really nice and helped set out the table, he gave us brand new paddles and he even printed out the rules and how to play table tennis for us. At times when he checked up on us he even played too.
I did have some experience playing table tennis back at my high school. I thought it was really fun to play and Alex and I had a really long rally. At time we didn't even need the table! We were just running around the room chasing the ball.
I think it's important to do and to be exposed to different things, if that be a person or activity. It builds up knowledge and creates relationships. It could even alter the path of you life.

JOEY G

Visit from Joseph George a.k.a Joey G!

Have you ever wondered what 'rap' stands for?
Today I found out that it stands for rhythm and poetry. Joseph is a rapper and also part of a christian community. He has his own album and has even toured around Philippines!
Today of our CAS lesson he helped us make a rap about 'food' and 'pizza'. We all brainstormed of words that rhymed with them and began structuring sentences. I'd write it here for you but it's too good to share.
Joseph decided to rap it for us first and then Nathan bravely attempted it after with a little persuasion. To get the whole class to get involved we decided to do a rap competition. While someone was rapping someone else would be humming a tune, clicking their fingers and cheering. I thought it was really funny. xD

More about Joseph George --> http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7514968&style=music&fulldesc=T

What I found interesting in what Joseph said is that don't just have to rap about negative things with lots a swearing. He raps about positive things, things that makes people feel better about themselves and that it's okay if you fall as-long as you stand back up. Joseph also incorporates religious text into his rap which makes him stand out.
It made me realise how powerful music can be. It can be a way of expressing how you feel; either good or bad. It can also be a way to educate. Many examples of this are given in our Spanish lesson. This song called 'Cry me a verb' teaches about verbs in Spanish.
In short there are many ways you can use music.

SQUASH 4

I played an hour of squash today with Angel and Nathan. Nathan taught me a lot about serving and tactics which was very helpful. A  bit of squash was a nice way to end the day but I felt super drained on the way home.
What I thought about today was the sheer persistence athletes have when they are particularly passionate about the sport they're playing; and it made me think that it's probably because they enjoy it. Of course there could be other factors, but I'd like to think it's not just because they can or have to when they fight for 1st place or to be a world champion.
If I find what I like and am passionate about in life then I guess it's a life worth living.
And also to try new things out. I've never played squash before and probably would have never tried it if I didn't require CAS hours. But thankfully because of that reason, I have found a sport that I do enjoy playing and learn new things and widen my knowledge from the people I play with.

TUTORING ISABELLA

Isabella is 5 years old and is a pupil at Ysgol Mair primary school, which was actually the primary school that I also went to when I was little. The tasks that I did with her were homework given to her from school, school competition and small activities that I came up with that I thought would help her. Isabella's homework mainly consisted of spellings and reading a short stories out of a book that had levels. With the spellings we went through them by saying them out loud, maybe giving an example of the word in a sentence, covering it up and asking her to write the word down. When it came to the reading, I let her do all the reading that she could, only helping her out with the longer words and guiding on how to pronounce certain words. Working with Isabella for a number of weeks allowed me to see her progress. The books she was given became a level higher and it became she became quicker at the spellings. It was great to see her excel and we also made a strong bond. She became accustomed to seeing me every week and I was sad to say that I wasn't going to help her anymore when my exams were looming and I had to focus my time on my work. With the competition, she had to design a logo showing peace. We discussed many ideas and what peace meant and it turns out all her hard work payed off because she won! The small activities that I made up were simply improvising with what I had at the time. For example, we were working on the dining table and there were a bowl of fruit. I got her to name them and tell me the colour and from there I added other fruits into our game that weren't in the bowl but she didn't name them because I had to tell her! All in all it was a great experience and I enjoyed it very much. It taught me how to interact with children, how they need extra attention and patience. While Isabella was learning from me, I too was learning from her.

SQUASH/RACKETBALL 3

Today I played with Angel again and Katrin. We played squash first but in the second hour we swapped to racket ball because a teacher came in to check on us and he told us that racket ball would be an easier game to start with so we gave it a try.
Yet again the ball was lost. I think now when we play there is a fear about who's going to hit the ball to hard that it doesn't come back down.
Me and Katrin had rallies too! And to make it a more interesting as well as educational, we counted our scores in different languages. We tried counting in spanish, french and welsh. For next time Angel came up with the idea of teaching Katrin how to count in our native language 'tagalog'.
While on breaks I had quite the conversation with Katrin. It was one of those 'tokkie' moments. I found out that Katrin also had the same interest as me about dreams and then the conversation turn to religion and nationalities. It was nice to talk to someone who liked the same things as you. You get to exchange ideas and share opinions and to it's good to get a different perspective too.
Here is a very long video of us playing.

SQUASH 2

Today I played squashed with my friends Angel and Alex. We only played for thirty minutes because of time tables not correlating. Alex taught us how to hit the ball properly. From backhand to forehand which helped a lot. I will be more prepared for tomorrow!
The ball was yet again lost however it was not me this time. Hope Linda won't mind.
All this exercise should be making me healthier. It will help with breathing and with toning of muscles. I was right about my arm aching. Even though it does I'll still play tomorrow; I actually enjoy playing squash.
There was an improvement with the rally. Alex and I managed to hit it eleven times in a row! For tomorrow I will set a target of 12, not too high just to be on the safe side.

SQUASH 1

First time playing!

Today was my first time playing squash at the college and to be honest it wasn't as easy as how they made it look in the movies. But to be less of a pessimist, I was playing with my awesome friend Angel :D
We had a good laugh at each other when we missed the ball and to make it even more difficult, the ball hardly bounced. And just to put it out there, we had no idea how to play squash properly! So what we did instead was just to have a rally, the highest consecutive hits was... 5. Nonetheless it was good exercise and i know for sure my right arm will be aching tomorrow.
I think I might go on the internet and learn how to play the game properly, which is what I should have done before playing today. I guess what I've learnt is to do background research before doing something new so that you're not completely clueless.
Advice to self, don't hit the ball to hard or the ball might not come back down = 50p out from pocket.

NETBALL TRYOUTS

Before I started I thought that we were going to play a normal netball game, we did none of the sort. We were doing basic training like running in a straight line and running from end of the court to the other. It really made me realise how unfit I was because I was tired only after doing a dew runs and my legs began to feel like jelly! This is probably due to absolutely no exercise during the summer holidays. The only highlight of the tryout was playing with my friend Angel. When we had to work as a pair but didn't quite understood the coach at first; we were just laughing at each other because we just looked silly clueless. It was one of those moment where you find everything hilarious that you could wet yourself. I'm not sure if I would go again considering the experience but also going around Britain for matches would mean loosing a lot of lesson time. I just wanted to play netball like in my P.E lessons back in high school. I feel like I would just be in people's way in a real game. However it was a good insight into netball but just wasn't for me. I will find other ways to exercise for CAS and for me.

Who owns the FISH? Einstein's Logic Question CREATIVITY

In our groups, we had to figure out who out of the five people owned the fish. They were all of different nationalities, all had a pet, favourite type of cigar to smoke, favourite drink and all lived in a separate house but their houses where together. You had to make a table or download one to save time and use the clues given to find out who the owner of the fish is.
I thought this quiz was extremely mentally straining but at the same time it was very intriguing. It was one of those things that if you didn't find out the answer it would drive you insane! It was a fun exercise but I was rather reserved in my group and tended to just agree now and then and occasionally give my own opinion and answers; so I will try to be more outgoing but in my defense it was only the second day of college!
First hour done, 149 to go \m/

If you haven't already tried it I would definitely give it a go. Here's a link of where you can find it:

MURDER MYSTERY

This was another activity we did for our second induction day. Everyone was given a slip of paper that they weren't allowed to show anyone. The purpose of the task was to communicate what information we had to figure out who the murderer was. There was a dead man in an alley way and two cases for his death was that he was being blackmailed or because he had an affair. It was interesting to see how to to find an answer. Some people went up and actually acted out the part and in the end we came up with an answer. We got some things wrong but got figured out the murderer in the end.
During this activity I was more reserved. I stayed quiet and spoke very briefly. I could make it a target to be a bit more outgoing.
